I am aware/lived through the historical computing limitations that lead to this choice by Adobe and I appreciate why they did this, but since I do not work with MF scans I find it annoying as using the OSes cache for disk writes would greatly improve performance. Since PS will not use the system cache on my machine as it only supports 4 GB of RAM I am seeking cheaper alternatives to boost performance and with what is on the market now, a RAM disk will be much cheaper than buying some solid state storage. Sadly, though such usage of the system/disk cache would benefit me, the cost of a new system supporting greater than 4 GB of RAM is much more expensive than the roughly $400 US that an upgrade to 4 GB of CAS 2 RAM would cost online. I am also aware that if a box has 6+ GB of RAM that PS will utilize the system cache.
Many times I will have over half a GB of RAM free (technically, it is used for system cache which I told the OS to favor) and I end up waiting for PS to write history states to the scratch disk even though RAM is free. The problem here is that PS has legacy scratch disk code from the 90s that bypasses the OSes caching mechanism. I am aware of that and I run XP with its memory model told to favor system cache.
