That was something that was verbalized to me as a kid. She shared, "My nannies told me that if you wanted it bad enough, impossible things could happen - like your dad coming back. Some, may have gotten her hopes up unnecessarily, in regards to her father. Since Cheryl only chose nannies that were in their 60s, Rossum lived under the influence of several older women. Clearly, if she was working for a Jewish family, she had no prejudice herself." But, not all the nanny experiences were positive. And she was a child - she didn't know any better when she was singing the German national anthem. She would tell that story, but she knew Hitler was a bad guy. ”The whole thing.Rossum said, "My mom is Jewish, so that was a little bit awkward, but Gertie was a great nanny. ”It’s so elegant - like out of a Sargent painting.” The solemn scene is one of the few to take place outside the theater walls, and, Schumacher adds, ”the only time Christine wears black.” Costume designer Alexandra Byrne chose the heroine’s silk-velvet dress and taffeta cape because she ”wanted something soft and fluid that worked with the snow.” The clean silhouette sure made her blood-red bouquet pop. ”The proportions were so that Christine would be a tiny, innocent figure these cold stones,” says director Joel Schumacher. He filled a London soundstage with nearly 30 fiberglass statues, some towering as high as 16 feet.
To create this scene, where songbird Christine (Emmy Rossum) visits the grave of her father, Pratt drew from two of the world’s most ornate cemeteries: Paris’ Pàre Lachaise and Montparnasse. Set in a haunted Paris opera house, the movie is a vision of romantic splendor.
”Nothing is meant to be terribly real.” Real? No. ”We tried to make it all a bit theatrical,” says production designer Anthony Pratt of the screen version of The Phantom of the Opera.
